The debate about whether to repair the Estabrook Dam or remove the Estabrook Dam really boils down to three simple questions.

  1. Which approach offers the lowest lifetime cost to Milwaukee County residents?
  2. Which approach provides the most flood protection for homes and businesses along the Milwaukee River?
  3. Which approach provides the least impact to the environment?

Based on the most recent environmental impact study, the answer to all three of these questions is the removal of Estabrook Dam. Not only is it the lowest cost now, but removing the dam now eliminates the need to rebuild the dam in 20 years.

I have yet to hear a good reason as to why we should keep the dam. There are many reasons to get rid of it. I hope that the current debate can be boiled down to these three questions and that a more sensible approach followed. Let's not kick this can down the road for which our kids will have to pay (again).
